Chemical Peels for Acne
According to the NHS, Acne is a problem that is believed to affect 8 in every 10 people, aged between 11 and 30 across the UK.* Acne can lead to serious issues with confidence and self-esteem. It is caused by an overproduction of the oily substance, sebum, and occurs when the glands at the surface of the skin become blocked with sebum and dead skin cells. Although associated with teenage years, it is a rising problem in adults, with many suffering with it late into their 20s and 30s. More sufferers are now trying specific chemical peels for acne as an effective solution, to reduce the appearance of spots and scarring.
Why chemical peels for acne?
There are several kinds of chemical peels you can use to treat acne, but the most popular tends to be a glycolic based peel. The peels work by removing dead, damaged or scarred skin and resurfacing fresh cells to reduce the appearance of acne scarring and provide much clearer and healthier looking skin. Chemical peels can also be a preventative method for keeping acne at bay. The removal of dead skin cells helps to keep the pores clean and certain peels can also impart anti-inflammatory properties which temporarily reduce oil secretions.
How many chemical peel treatments do I need?
Depending on the severity of your condition, you can often choose between three different intensities of chemical peels for acne. A lighter peel, for example, would probably be used to treat relatively shallow acne scars, whilst a medium peel would target deeper layers of skin and a deep chemical peel is for those with quite severe acne scarring who would like more dramatic results. The number of chemical peels you require will depend on the results you would like and the seriousness of your acne. It is always a good idea to seek advice from an aesthetics specialist before deciding on the treatment you want.
